Police on Tuesday arrested seven men for suspected involvement in a sensational burglary in April at a security vault in London’s famous Hatton Garden jewellery quarter. Commander Peter Spindler of the Metropolitan Police disclosed this to newsmen in London.
However, the burglary has left the world wondering how it was accomplished without police noticing.

The seven suspects, aged 48 to 76, were detained in raids at 12 addresses involving some 200 officers.

“Authorities also recovered many high-value items. The suspects were charged with conspiracy to burgle. Investigations are continuing’’, Spindler said.

A police statement said a number of large bags containing significant amounts of high value property have been recovered from one address.

“Officers are confident these are items stolen during the burglary’’, it said.
It noted that the organised criminals took advantage of the April 3 to April 6 Easter holidays to open 72 safety deposit boxes, escaping with a haul potentially worth tens of millions of pounds.

They apparently climbed down an elevator shaft with the necessary equipment to drill through a thick wall.
“They are believed to have spent hours or days drilling through the vault’s wall before making off with the valuables’’, the statement said.

Spindler apologised for police failing to respond to an alarm at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd on April 3, saying they probably should have taken action.

British media speculated that the operation could turn out to be one of the world’s biggest robberies, estimating the value of the gold, diamonds, cash and jewellery to 300 million dollars.
