The Nigeria Police has concluded plans to probe the present state of the force’s armoury nationwide, after the May 29 inauguration.
The development is to help in determining what they have in their armoury, what they have lost, and how some weapons and equipment were lost.
This is as a total of 36, 599 personnel, will soon be promoted to their next ranks.
The disclosures were made Thursday at an interactive meeting the Inspector General General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, held at the Force Headquarters with select Inspectors and the rank and file, who were drawn from the 12 Zonal Commands of the police.
According to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, the planned inventory of armoury across the country, would enable the force to have an update on its equipment and weapons, and also to apply necessary sanctions, where any armourer or personnel may have acted in breach of laws guiding their conduct.
Also speaking at the event the DIG, Finance and Administratin, Mr. Hilary Opara, declared that 36, 599 police personnel will soon be promoted to their next ranks.
A breakdown of the number shows that 6, 483 sergeants will be promoted to the rank of inspector, 29, 937 corporals to sergeant, while 179 other personnel will be elevated to corporal rank.
Earlier, the IGP said: “Henceforth, only government officials would enjoy police protection”, warning that any police personnel seen carrying handbags or dragging boxes of private individuals around, will be arrested.
Arase further told the officers and men, that: “As from henceforth, your welfare will be tied to your good conduct.”
He, however, assured them that “Officers, who are due (for promotion), will proceed to various training colleges.”
The police chief commended the personnel for their conduct during the general elections.
Meanwhile, the IGP has ordered zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) and Command police commissioners, to tighten security around vulnerable points as well as “critical infrastructure”, ahead of the May 29 hand over date.
