846 pregnant women die in Lagos
About 846 pregnant women died during childbirth in Lagos Stateowned hospitals between 2011 and 2014, New Telegraph’s investigation reveals. A total of 89,652 babies were also delivered within the period in the state health facilities. It was also learnt that the state recorded 168,711 deliveries between 2006 and 2014 with 161,373 live births.
A total of 8,353 were recorded as stillbirths in the last nine years. According to a report detailing the activities and performance of the state Ministry of Health, 184,165 pregnant women attended the antenatal clinics in all the state-owned health facilities in 2014 alone.
Only 24,177 deliveries were recorded in the same year while 200 women died in the process of giving birth.
The report also showed that 33,992 pregnant women gave birth though caesarean sessions in the state-owned hospitals between 2011 and 2014, while a total of 3,660 still births were recorded.
Speaking on efforts to reduce maternal mortality rate, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, said the government was doing everything to improve the health infrastructure.
Idris added that the state Maternal and Child Mortality Reduction Programme was specifically launched by Governor Babatunde Fashola to improve the health behaviour of the women of childbearing age and the community in general on preventable maternal and child health intervention.
The commissioner said the government had also identified and equipped 24-hour primary health facilities in each of the local governments and local council development areas (LCDAs) to provide emergency obstetric care at the primary level.
