Unknown gunmen have killed a former Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, (PDP) in Katsina-Ala local government area of Benue State, Hon. Lumunnege Zegeguve in Katsina-Ala town.
Speaking with newsmen in a telephone chat, Benue State Police Public Relations’ Officer (PPRO), ASP Austin Ezeani confirmed that the incident occurred at about 5pm in Tiir area of the town but quickly enthused that the murder was a case of criminal conspiracy.
The PPRO explained that five heavily armed gunmen had accosted the party chieftain and after shooting him, continued to shoot sporadically into the air to escape arrest.
Ezeani however noted that a relation of the deceased, one Orshee Tete Zegeguve who was suspected to be an accomplice was arrested in connection with the murder while the police is still on the trail other fleeing members of the gang.
The PPRO disclosed that three empty shells of AK47 were recovered at the scene of the incident, adding that the body of the late party chair has since been deposited at the General hospital, Katsina-Ala.
It should be noted that Katsina-Ala local government area had of late become a hub of criminality with the abduction of some prominent personalities including the Provost of College of Education, Katsinal Ala as well as the killing of an Assistant Inspector of Police Baba Ibrahim who was on a special mission from the Force Headquarters, Abuja to investigate the case of cattle rustling in the area
