A 72-year old religious leader, Reverend David Memeh, has been reportedly shot dead in Benin, Edo state, by unknown gunmen suspected to be assassins.
The cleric who was a retired Reverend at the Foursquare Gospel Church, was reportedly shot twice after they forcefully gained entrance into his residence located in the Government Reservation Area of the City.
Wife of the victim, Deaconess Alice who narrated the incident in tears said her husband begged for his life to be spared before he was shot by two gunmen who did not take anything from the residence except her cell phone and her husband’s.
According to her, the assailants broke into their apartment through the window in her husband’s room but that her husband fled to her room, adding that, the two killers slapped her husband severally before they dragged him to kill.
“I ran out after I heard gunshot, I wanted them to kill me but the killers had left. We were only four at home and they overpowered us.
“My husband is dead. I will appreciate if government arrest the killers,” she said.
When contacted, Spokesman for the Edo Police Command, DSP Stephen Onwochei, confirmed the incident and said investigation into the killing was ongoing.
