I killed security guard in self-defence –Suspect

Homicide detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos State, have arrested a 27-year-old generator repairer, Abimbola Azeez, who stabbed a security guard to death. Azeez reportedly stabbed Tochukwu Ejika several times in his stomach during a misunderstanding at God’s Own Estate at Ijanikin, Lagos.

It was learnt the suspect was on his way out of the estate when Ejika, who was the chief security officer, accosted him about 8pm on May 5. A misunderstanding ensued between them which led to exchange of words and later degenerated into a brawl.
It was gathered that before residents could intervene, Azeez had stabbed the victim several times in the stomach, which led to loss of blood and eventual death. Immediately the suspect was taken to Ijanikin Divisional Police Station while the body was deposited at the mortuary. “I’m Abimbola Azeez. I am from Ikire in Osun State.
I live with my friend, R. Kelly, at Ayetoro, Ijanikin on Badagry Expressway. I had accommodation challenge. “Last week, I went to my customer’s house, Mr Olokun, to repair his generator. When I got there, he was not at home but his wife was at home. So she brought the generator out for me to fix, which I did. After fixing the generator, she paid me N500.
I have known Olokun for over three years,” Azeez said. The suspect said before he went to Olokun’s house, he had packed his belongings with the hope of squatting with the man’s family pending when he would be able to raise money and rent another apartment. He said: “Although he did not give me any answer when I called him to inform him of my intentions, I decided to try my luck. After I fixed the generator, I left my belongings in house and went to a friend’s place.
“When I went back to Olokun’s house in the evening, his wife told me that her husband said I could not squat with them. I had no option but to take my luggage and leave. “On my way out of the estate, a man accosted me and asked me to go back; I did not know he was the estate security officer.
When I refused to move back, he hit me with a blank. Angrily, I took the plank and hit him back. He then brought out a dagger and tried to stab me, but luckily I dogged it. I took the dagger from him and in self-defence I stabbed him in his belly. Before I knew what was happening, some guys were all over me and we started fighting.
“I regret all that has happened. But when he attacked me with the dagger what would I have done? Should I allow him to kill me? It is quite unfortunate that he died but he would have killed me. I did not want him to kill me.” It was gathered that the case had been transferred to SCID, Yaba, for further investigation.
